Just what I was looking for!
Just what I was looking for!
The program itself is a great idea, however the execution could use a little work. The filters are a little over done and don’t give the photographs an authemtic color scale. I would suggest the company turn to VSCOcam on IOS for a little inspiration on the right types of filters. I’m excited to see where this program goes in the future!
Great with portraits. Looking forward to the upgrades.
I downloaded this app after reading the reviews and doing some research into it to see what all it had to offer. (A few people complaining about the Monthly subscription feature is no reason to not get an app imo). After downloading the app and loading a pic, i started with the editing tools. Being along-time Photoshop user, I found the toolset rather primitive, but straight-forward. So, for the beginner, it should work nicely. But anyone looking for a robust control set should look elsewhere. After that, I moved into the filters. They are arranged in categories - Effect, Overlay, Border, Stylize, Stickers, and Type. Each category is then divided into like-styled filters, such as under the Overlay category, some of the subheadings there are Chem Burn, Color Correction, Flame and Fireworks. I worked my way through each of the filter categories, and each one is unique in its own way. The one that I was most impressed with was Overlay - Canvas, which allows you to turn your photos into a canvas-like picture. Granted, it only looks good on certain pics, but it is still nice when done right. For the most part, the majority of the filters had me wondering WTH? for most of the time, but then I had an AHA! moment, and I realized why they put them all together like that (although the naming still has me wondering). Every one of the filters has an adjustment slider on it and controls, which allow you to set it up just the way you want - so you are never stuck with just using the default look. For anyone with an adventurous side, you may want to explore the many filters offered. Just choose a pic at random and apply the filters, one at a time, to the pic to see what each one does. Adjust the sliders and change the settings on each one too. Many of you will be surprised at the outcomes. It is also worth noting that, despite the many comments to the contrary, you are entitled to use everything you see when you download the program. The added functionality does not exist until you pay the membership fee, which is optional and, if you so desire, can be easily accessed from a drop-down menu in the program. I, for one, am all in favor of low-cost subscription based software, as long as it serves a purpose, keeps the customer first and maintains the integrity of the software. The problem with most subscription software plans now is they fall short in one of those three areas. But Autodesk has been around for decades and has almost as much experience with this sort of business model, just on an Enterprise and Industrial scale.
It’s easy to use but i can do more and better things in just a few minutes on Photoshop. Is just a more powerful instagram to make everyone feel like an artist.
This app is assome cant go wrong. I cant belive how easy it is to use...
I like to use photo editing apps but I am not a professional by any means. This app has a lot of filters, effects etc. and the app allows you pretty much full control over the photo, for example, instead of just allowing a watercolor effect, the app allows you to control how much of that effect is visible. It is simple to use for beginners. I would compare it to an advanced aviary for the iphone. I am really impressed with it!
My system: MAC MINI, Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F34). Pixlr crashed 5 or 6 times. Mostly when opening. When it chrashes, display goes black. Then you must Restart. Some open windows may be distoryed.
Autodesk is an organization that has been around for as long or longer than Adobe. They arent some fly by night developer. I say this because a number of reviews (and I read them all) made reference to the app trying to bill for features. That said when you download the product none of the functionality you see in the free version is paid. There are some features called "Essentials" that you have to sign up for a account (also free) with email address to unlock the essentials features. The paid features arent shown unless you purchase them. If you visit the autodesk website for the app it explains the features that are part of the paid app in the user guide. There are 2 icon badges that you will see on some of the effects. The first is a download symbol, this doesnt mean you pay for it, its just a feature (sticker, style, overlay, etc) that isnt part of the app download and is updated independent of the app download. The 2nd is a PINK Ribbon (I think it looks sort of like a bio-hazard symbol) note that if you signed up for the paid membership the Ribbons will be BLUE. But in either case it indicates a newer feature. (after a few uses the ribbon will disappear) Now to the features. Like I said there are a number that are common to picture apps. Then there are a few that suprised me in how they functioned. The fast features are a number of common elements that you see. But one that I havent seen done this well is "heal" It fixes imperfections on a picture and one part in particular "shade" lightens a dark area of a photo to bring it up to a more common level. All the features have adjustments so you can put stickers in of cupcakes, etc. Make them almost seethru and put them above someones head with words like, "but I didnt want spinach." The biggest differrence is these sliders compared with other free apps which have a more take it or leave it approach to editing or filters. Or the Adobeesque approach where the interface is so unaccommodating that a novice simply will move on. This interface has hover info as wel as when you try an effect it is easy to cancel before keeping it or to undo if you decide a few clicks later that it wasnt what you wanted afterall. It also is non destructive. When you open a picture to edit it doesnt change that picture, you are asked to create a new file name so unless you click on the original picture file during the save as process your original is protected. Other apps arent so forgiving. (I have learned the hard way) Overall its a good app for a novice who wants their pictures to look better with minimal time investment to learn.
First let me say I loved this app. It was very easy to use and had so much to offer. Now here’s the rub, the app kept crashing, then I lost the pic I was working om. I actually had to keep restarting my mac book pro and it got so annoying that I unistalled the app and that is a darn shame because I really liked it. I have Yosemite and I think y’all need to do some more tweaking!
Best free photo editing app! Easy to use and simple. Many choices for effects and overlays!
Update: This very significant bug, reported for v. 1.01 in September 2014, is not fixed as of v. 1.03 (December 2014). I’ve knocked another star off my rating because the app has been mostly unusable for the 4 months I’ve had it. —— Original review —— Many apps offer a collection of filters. This one has several that are both unusual and attractive. At least at the basic level, with no subscriptions etc., its not a particularly novel app these days, but it’s pretty well done of its kind; its easy enough to use and the basic set is enough for decent utility. The main problem is that due to a bug, the preview of the filtered image that’s shown in the app does not look like the final version that’s saved to your computer. Obviously, this is a significant problem because you have no way of knowing what you’re actually applying to your images until you’re finished. It doesn’t seem to be a major issue for all the filters, but for some the difference is very large, and the saved version looks much worse than the displayed version. Email support was fairly quick and polite and said that this is a bug that will be fixed soon. I’ll update the review when this bug is fixed.
For the first time I tried using the program yesterday. I played around with it a little, editing a photo in hopes to learn how to use the features. Seemed to be ok yesterday. Today, tried opening the program to use the app and edit pics for Christmas cards and I continuously get an error message pop up. Not a useful tool at all if it isn’t going to allow me to use the app due to some bug. Major thumbs down.
The BUG is not fixed! The issue still exists and it is very frustrating. After spending time editing only to find that the image saved to the computer is nothing like your final version that you thought was a masterpiece. What is taking so long to fix the issue?
I opened the app. once and was able to check out the features but since the first use I no longer can open the app. I only get an error message. Very disappointing. ANy time frame on when this is going to be corrected?
Am I the only one who can’t delete pictures off of this thing? There’s no delete button to be found. The same picture I first downloaded is stuck on the program and I can’t remove it.
Never got to try it. Now deleted.
Okay, so I use this app to make edits for my Tumblr blog, and at first it was great! I love all of the features, it’s easy to use, and my edits turn out great! But, I’ve had problems with it for the past two days. Problems as in, it will not open. AT ALL. I’ve restarted my Mac, closed the app, and reported the crashes a dozen times, but it still WILL NOT WORK! Please fix the bug! This is the best photo editing app I’ve used, but it’s starting to piss me off.
Updated: I strongly recommend anyone whos considering a paying membership to wait at least 3 months to see if the app doesnt suddently stop working. Even though Im a pro member (aka paid member) no one answers the support tickets and Im still unable to use an app that I paid for. See the other reviews, plenty others are having the same app-wont-launch problem and yet Autodesk couldnt even be bothered to answer support tickets! ----- Im a premium member and when this app works its a great app, but I can confirm that the preview bug still exists (preview is sometimes not the same as saved image) and today all of a sudden the app refuses to launch, it just keeps crashing. Now going to reinstall it and see it works. Autodesk needs to stablize this app especially since its charging money for it.
I love pixlr and have been using it for a while now, and it’s my favorite photo editing app. But for the past couple of weeks now, the app won’t open and I keep getting crash messages. I really hope they fix this bug soon, because it’s a major problem.
